What Happened In This Tragic Skydiving Accident?

By: Dorothy Hyde Posted in: Wrongful Death

Today we want to talk to you about a tragic accident that happened that took the life of a boy the day before his eighteenth birthday. Police say that a North Texas teenager, Dayton Bryant, was skydiving as part of his celebration when there was a parachute malfunction.

This was his first time skydiving and he was on a solo jump, meaning that he was not tethered to an instructor. At the Law Office of Dorothy Hyde, we have read this story and we want to talk about some red flags. If you need a Dallas wrongful death attorney, contact us today so we can get to work helping you.

It Was Supposed To Be Fun

Bryant was skydiving with High Sky Adventures, a company who advertises a first-jump course. It involved hours of training before a person is allowed to make a static line jump, meaning that their parachute is supposed to automatically open when a person jumps from a plane.

However, according to the United States Parachute Association, skydiving schools require that a person is 18-years-old before they can jump. Unfortunately, these rules are voluntary, as the FAA has not set a legal requirement.

The county coroner says that Bryant’s parachute opened, but that there were complications. Bystanders and first responders attempted to revive Bryant on the scene, but they were unsuccessful.

Wrongful Death?

Cases of wrongful death arise when the negligent or careless actions of another person or group leads to someone’s death. We are sure that an investigation will uncover what went wrong in this case.

  • Was the parachute packed right and up to code?
  • Did Bryant receive adequate training before the jump?

Wrongful death cases arise in many different cases. Some of the most common are:

  • Vehicle crashes, particularly when a drunk or distracted driver cause injuries.
  • Medical mistakes that are caused by a healthcare professional’s negligence.
  • Workplace accidents when a company does not provide proper safety equipment or training to employees.
  • Defective products that are put on the market. This can include medications, vehicles, toys, appliances, foods, beverages, and more.
  • Premises liability cases in which property owners fail to maintain a safe environment for invited guests and patrons.
  • Dog attacks that occur when a dog’s owner is negligent in their duties to secure their pet.

Please know that this is not a complete list. Always consult with legal counsel before making a decision regarding your particular case.
