Motorcycle Accident

In 2017, 501 motorcyclists were killed and over 5,000 motorcyclists were injured in Texas motorcycle accidents. Unfortunately, we see our share of motorcycle accident fatalities and injuries right here in Fort Worth as well. There are common causes of motorcycle accidents and some are more often related to single vehicle accidents and others are more often related to multiple vehicle accidents. See below for a breakdown:

Single vehicle motorcycle accident causes

  • Debris in road – Unexpected debris in the road can be hazardous to any vehicle, but motorcycles are more at risk for accidents due to debris than cars or SUVs. For example, an empty box would likely be flattened by an SUV or thrown into the air, but a motorcycle hitting an empty box could cause an accident.
  • Other road conditions – Road conditions such as water, ice, snow, and gravel can cause a motorcycle to slip, slide, and lose control. Motorcycles on two wheels do not have the same stability as four-wheel vehicles.
  • Speed – Motorcyclists love the open road and feeling the wind in their face, so it is natural to want to drive faster, however, speed is a factor in many single vehicle injury accidents. If a motorcyclist is traveling too fast to maneuver for a sudden animal in the road, a sharp curve, or something else, an accident is bound to happen.
  • Drugs and alcohol – Drugs and alcohol are too often involved in single-vehicle motorcycle accidents.

Multiple vehicle motorcycle accidents

  • Speed, drugs, and alcohol – These factors are commonly involved in single-vehicle motorcycle accidents, but they are also unfortunately involved in multiple vehicle motorcycle accidents as well.
  • Motor vehicle is not aware of the motorcycle in its presence – Often other drivers simply are not looking for motorcycles and do not see them because they are small. Bright clothes, extra caution at intersections, and staying out of other vehicles’ blind spots can help keep you safe.
  • Occupant opening parked vehicle door – Accidents happen when a parked vehicle occupant swings open his or her door into the path of an oncoming motorcyclist. Be prepared for that and try to keep a safe distance from parked cars.
  • Distracted driving – Unfortunately, technological advances and cell phone capabilities keep distracted driving accidents on the rise.
  • Aggressive driving – Aggressive driving by the motorcyclist or the other vehicle is also a common cause of motorcycle accidents.

Motorcycle accident injuries

Automobile passengers are enclosed, they have airbags and seatbelts, and they are traveling on four wheels so their vehicles are much safer. Motorcycles have significantly less protection and are much smaller in weight and size. For these reasons, motorcycle riders are at a significantly higher risk of serious injuries and damages in an accident.
