Did The Shutdown Cause Consumer Danger?
For the moment, the partial government shutdown is over. While we saw on the nightly news the many ways in which people were affected, there are some things that happened that did not get much notice in the news.
This Washington Post story shows how product recalls were significantly affected by the government shutdown. The agency that deals with recalls, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, was also shutdown. Their personnel were deemed “non-essential.”
This means that the American public had no way of knowing when a product they might have could cause them harm. Also affected was the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They, too, could not notify anyone about faulty vehicles, tires, or car seats.
“People have no idea if they’re using something that is dangerous,” said the executive director of the nonprofit group Kids in Danger.
At the Law Office of Dorothy Hyde, we are glad that these agencies are back up and running, but that does not change the fact that there are hundreds of faulty products on the market. Do you know what to do if something you use or consume causes harm to your family?

While there have been no confirmed reports of injury or illness happening due to an inability to put out recall notices, the situation could have been disastrous. The public has a right to know when there are items that could cause them harm on the market. If you go look at the government recall website that tracks current recalls, you will see just how many industries are affected. It goes well beyond the occasional major recall we see on the news at night.
These recalls usually take place for one of three reasons: (1) they have a poor design, (2) they experience a problem during manufacturing, and (3) they are not labeled correctly. All three of those problems can cause major harm to consumers.
Think about how many products you use each day. The numbers are probably in the hundreds, especially when you consider that some of the things we use contain products from many different companies. Next time you open your refrigerator, do a quick estimate of how many different companies those products come from.
