Dallas Deputy Injured In Hit-And-Run Crash
In late February, a Dallas deputy was injured after a driver collided with two Dallas County police cars in a hit-and-run incident. The two police cars were blocking two lanes of traffic due to a stalled tractor-trailer.
The 2005 Dodge truck struck both vehicles and then fled the scene. There was a deputy in each vehicle at the time. The impact caused a rifle in one of the vehicles to come loose and hit a deputy in the head. The injured officer saw the driver continue to drive northbound on Interstate 35E and attempted pursuit but was unable due to damage to the vehicle.
Police later located and apprehended the driver, James Craig Supplee. He was charged with DUI as well as causing an accident involving injury.
At the Law Office of Dorothy Hyde, we think this incident shows that drunk drivers cause the roadways in and around the city to be unpredictable. If you need a Dallas car accident attorney, you can count on us to be by your side.
A Larger Problem
When we look at the Texas Department of Transportation numbers on drunk driving crashes, we see some saddening statistics. For the latest reporting year, there were:
- 1,024 DUI fatalities
- Over 10,000 DUI injuries
We know that DUI crash fatalities accounted for 28% of the total traffic-related fatalities in Texas in 2017.
Despite continual efforts on the part of law enforcement to crack down on drunk drivers, there are still far too many people who make the irresponsible and reckless choice to get behind the wheel while impaired.
Other Concerns On The Roadways
A growing concern for drivers in Texas is the rise of modern technology. How many times have you been driving down the roadway and noticed a driver near you staring down at their phone?
Distracted driving can be just as deadly as impaired driving. This is particularly a concern for younger age groups who are already inexperienced behind the wheel. If someone is checking a text message or watching a video clip, then their eyes are not on the roadway.
Injuries from vehicle accidents can cost a tremendous amount of money, both when it comes to medical expenses as well as with other hidden costs like lost income, rehabilitation, and pain and suffering damages.
