Pedestrian Accident

As if Dallas pedestrians did not have enough to worry about, now they need to watch out for electric scooters zipping along all over the place. Emergency rooms across the United States have reported an uptick in severe accidents following the arrival of electric scooters in their cities.

So, how are Dallas pedestrians doing so far?

Not too bad, yet. Since July, Dallas officials say there have only been a few 911 calls related to scooter incidents. The article also points out that not everyone injured in a scooter accident actually calls 911. Unfortunately, local hospitals do not keep track of scooter injuries.

At the Law Office of Dorothy Hyde, we will continue to keep an eye on motorized scooter safety, but we know that this is only one more way that pedestrians can get hurt in our city.

When you need a Dallas pedestrian accident attorney, you can count on our team to get the compensation you deserve for your accident-related expenses.

The Reality

There is no doubt that pedestrians are the most vulnerable group in and around the roadways. They have no protection from the impact of a vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, or anything else that comes at them. That is why pedestrian accidents often result in severe injuries. It is not uncommon to these following in a pedestrian incident:

  • Lacerations or amputations
  • Major internal injuries (spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, etc.)
  • Broken and dislocated bones

All of these injuries require medical care. Often, surgery is needed to fix the problem.

Will your insurance cover all of these medical expenses?

Will it cover any income you lose if your injuries keep you from working?

For the latest reporting year for Texas, there were a total of 5,767 pedestrian crashes. Out of those, there were 604 fatalities and over 3,000 injuries.

How They Happen

As we saw in the opening story, electric scooters are moving into Dallas and we will likely see that they increase pedestrian accidents. However, they are only one way that pedestrians get hurt.

Vehicle accidents can cause serious harm to the human body. A pedestrian versus vehicle collision will never end well for the pedestrian. Drunk and distracted drivers are especially dangerous to pedestrians, as they may not even slow down before an impact.

Many times, pedestrians are hit while using designated crosswalks or right-of-ways at intersections. This often happens when drivers are in a hurry and disregard the law.

We want to bring you a story from nearby Garland today because it highlights what we know about pedestrian injuries – the do not necessarily happen on or directly around the roadway. Sometimes, pedestrians are in danger even when they are inside of a store.

Last month, an incident of impatience led to the driver of an SUV slamming the gas pedal too hard and sending the vehicle into the Panaderia Guatemalteca, a popular area bakery. Watching the surveillance footage, it is hard to believe that nobody was killed in the incident.

It happened when two vehicles were trying to get into the same parking spot in front of the store. In an effort to get into the space before the other vehicle, the driver over punched the gas.

“There were shelves. Our middle unit was thrown. There were soda cans. There was glass everywhere,” said the bakery owner’s son.

Most of the ten people injured were treated on scene. One was taken to the hospital.
At the Law Offices of Dorothy Hyde, we know that incidents like this can happen anywhere. If you need a Dallas pedestrian accident attorney, you can count on us to get the compensation you deserve.

The Numbers

When you are out on foot, we know the last thing you are thinking about is an accident. Unfortunately, you cannot control the actions of others around you. During the latest reporting year for Texas, there were 5,767 pedestrian accidents. Of those:

  • There were 614 fatalities
  • There were 1,144 serious injuries
  • There were over 2,000 less serious injuries

Pedestrians are especially vulnerable when it comes to accidents. They have no way to protect themselves from the impact of a vehicle that weighs thousands of pounds. In the story above, the situation would have been much worse has it not been for the wall and large refrigerators that the SUV had to go through before it hit the people. Usually, a pedestrian is hit by the vehicle and thrown to the ground for a second impact.
It is not uncommon to see the following in a pedestrian accident:

  • Broken and dislocated bones
  • Spinal and head injuries
  • Major internal organ damage
  • Soft tissue injuries

Often, these injuries require major medical intervention to repair followed by long periods of rehabilitation for a full recovery. This can lead to major medical bills.
Other times, people are permanently disabled and are unable to return to work.
Will your insurance cover all of these expenses and lost income?
